What is the point of sending someone to prison?
Norway's prison system has a focus on rehabilitation that works. The country has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world. To understand their approach, we visited Halden fengsel, a maximum-security prison in Halden, Norway. It has three main units and has no conventional security.
Representatives from the Association for the Defense of Human Rights in Norway were there as part of a fact-finding mission. They were impressed by what they saw. The prison is designed to encourage inmates to take responsibility for their actions and to prepare them to reintegrate into society upon release.
